Stripes and rows, and what they reveal

So, it's fairly obvious from my work that I like things in rows. I mean, look at this: rows and rows of woolly sheep. You can see this on the website here

And then I like stripes too, as seen in my exhibition display using ticking fabric:

So I was a happy bunny walking along Happisburgh beach at the weekend - stripes and rows everywhere:

If I were still designing on the loom in weaving, what inspiration I'd be finding here.
Weaving (one of my many past lives) - lots of rows and stripes
Archaeology (another of my past lives) - lots of rows and stripes in the form of sediments and deposits laid down over time
So stripes and rows is an element that brings together lots of my interests - I've never really thought about that before....

What theme do you find running through your life?

  2. Thanks Gabs! It was a great weekend - spring has to be just the best time of year to be in England.

  3. I like repetition in objects - particularly when I am photographing them. Three of something can look so much more than just three times one of something.

I think there must be something in our brains that responds to this because it is seen so much in nature and in design.

I recall going to a country house - I think it was in Castle Howard - where some rolls of wallpaper had been brought back from China in the 1800s, stored in an attic and forgotten. It was found some years ago and used to paper the 'Chinese Room'.

The wallpaper was hand painted as one huge continuous scene peopled with tiny figures and scenes of Chinese life.

The thing is, that was no repetition as one walked around the room. So the sense of being in the room was quite different from a 'normal' papered room.

  4. That sounds like a really interesting room, David. Just had a quick peek at your blog - interesting posts there, so will go and have a longer read in a while.
    Thanks for your comment.
